In the 1970s, broadcast media restructured the domestic space. Fifty years later, social media is restructuring democracies and bodies. And with this, a new category of the user as a political entity has emerged. The user isn't just a citizen who votes or a consumer who buys. The user is shaped by affective media streams—their attention, emotional responses, and behavioral patterns become the raw material that feeds back into the system. The user generates data that trains the next iteration of media. The user isn't just surveilled or manipulated; the user is where the material conditions of contemporary politics are enacted.

Recon is a media monitoring and analysis tool that treats information streams like audio signals—applying sound synthesis and signal processing techniques to political and social media data. It functions as a "forensic console" for deconstructing how narratives are manufactured and circulated. Recon positions itself as active political practice, not critique.

All data has flat ontological importance. We need simple tools—held by us, not subject to subscription or service. Tools that let the user become an operator: the sickle and hammer of the technological age. The tool should give its operator direct access to this mediatic infrastructure—not to observe it from a distance, but to operate on it.

PERFORMATIVE EXPERIMENT

Two performers, a chainsaw and six wooden chairs.

The experiment focuses on the relationship between humans, technology, and the creative and destructive potential of tools. The central part of the experimental set-up is a chainsaw. Several wooden chairs are placed in the room and are constantly rearranged. In this ever-changing constellation, one can reflect on power relations while the potentiality of the chainsaw is explored; not knowing if and when the moment of destruction has come.

LYING DOWN WITH TIME

	EXPERIMENTS WITH SPEAKERS AND PIPES / PHYSICAL FILTERS"Apparatuses do not merely facilitate measurements; they produce (in) different worlds." — Karen Barad, Meeting the Universe Halfway

Lying Down With Time is in response to Moss’s observation of people in Zurich and their loyalty to clock time. How does this relate to the idea of freedom and what does this mean for someone who conceives and lives time differently?

In an attempt create an apparatus that can sharpen the question, Moss explores a series of incremental experiments, entangling ideas taken from computer science research (Time, clocks and ordering of events in a distributed network, Leslie et. al.) and biology with philosophy and electronics.

"The measurement of time is not just about clocks ticking; it involves complex cultural and philosophical frameworks that dictate our understanding of temporal reality." — Sundar Sarukkai”

BENTHOS PEOPLE

>>> Morehere

We can assume that the beings in the benthos have ‘experience’. They sense the world around them, move, communicate, feel pain, have dreams or hallucinations, perhaps possess desires, or encounter different mental states and have experience. As a way to get close to this experience, I find people who study such ecologies - scientists - as mediums in themselves. Science as a method, needs to distance the scientist from her subjectivity. I am interested in these subjective encounters between the scientist and her subject of study.

‘Benthos’ refers to the community of organisms or aquatic beings that live on or in the bottom sediments of the sea or river. In putting ‘benthos’ together with ‘people’, I invite the human listener to contemplate the experience of life in the Benthos variously relating to this environment.

Our sensory abilities allow us to observe only a slice of the world, such as a narrow band of light, or a narrow band of sonic energy. An individual brain evolved through generations and through our lives, can produce our very individual experiences. How do we know more than that can be thought or felt? Meanings accumulate with time. As one sits on the edge of trying to ‘be’ another, one needs to empty oneself of the desire of ‘knowing’ or creating ‘meaning,’ because our knowledges and meaning makings are deeply contaminated with being human.

Vardhan as a scientist has researched corals and marine life in the Andaman and Nicobar region over the course of 15 years. His closeness with the corals is subjective, while his research is an objective investigation of phenomenon. In this tension lies the key to seeing differently and seeing more. Here I have used recordings made using a hydrophone to reproduce the unknowable landscape of the benthos. Using these recordings, the narration of one of his dives, and the pioneering early twentieth century hand painted collaborative maps of Marie Tharp (geologist and oceanographic cartographer) and Berann (geologist), I have tried to allude to this more-than-human experience.

FRAME OF REFERENCE

	>>> More Here

The sound wave and its absorptions, reflections, refractions and shadows produces a sonic image of the listener's surroundings.
Consider three Scenarios-
Scenario 1: You are passing through a forest in a vehicle. You have fleating sense(s) of all the beings you are passing through. The glass box that packs you in is one of many units.
Scenario 2: You are an insect in a forest. There is a path cutting through the forest. Every once in a while, and sometimes more often, a loud, fast moving object beaming light at night and can be heard from a distance, passes through. Each instance of this has a distinct beginning and end in the sound field. It cuts out everything at its peak.
Scenario 3: You are an insect on/in a vehicle on the road and your kin are in the forest - sounding. You can hear their collective din but none of them can be heard distinctly. You make a call. But in the time that they hear you, you will be gone.We hear not just the sound but also the room, the resonant frequency of the room, the time it takes for sound to be absorbed, it's echo and reverb, distances and disturbances - connecting the physical space to the psychoacoustic experience of the room.

Frame of Reference consists of a speaker, pendulum and apparatus, a composition and two images. The two images are studies of sound waves - one of the room where the work was installed and one of the woods and a crustatean.
